3 curly hair FAQ’s

Is my hair is curly?

If your hair gets poofy or fizzy after you brush it, does it dry with a pattern, when wet does it showcase small bends + movement…you might have curly hair! If you aren’t sure, ask a PRO. We can guide you through all the ins + outs of your specific hair type. They key to determining if you have curly hair on your own is through watching your hair naturally after you’ve washed it and without brushing it. When you do this it’s natural pattern will show itself.

How am I supposed to treat my curly hair?

First things first: you never want to brush your hair when it’s dry. It will make it frizzy + cause breakage with too much tension. Even touching too much after the hair has dried will cause curly hair to get frizzy. The best time to detangle your hair is when it’s wet with a conditioning agent in it, preferably with a wide tooth comb. Our fan faves: Davines all-in-one Oi Milk + Dede leave-in Conditioner. Try to avoid hot water with curlsYour hair is already lacking moisture + hot water will strip your hair of any chance of retaining that needed moisture. Cooler water will also improve curl definition, boost shine + reduce that pesky frizz.

How do I style my curly hair?

Knowing what type of curl pattern will help you figure out how to treat your hair. There are three types of curlswavy, curly + coily.

Wavy hair

Making sure your hair is completely wet is crucial to getting your waves to come through. You will also need to add a leave-in conditioner, curl cream + a mousse to ensure moisture, control + hold.

When applying products you’ll use a scrunching method to encourage curls.

Curly hair

Depending on the pattern of the hair, you might need encouragement for some of your curls to hold their shape. Having the leave-in, curl cream, gel or curl controller with a mousse will help with controlling it’s shape + frizz prevention.

Coily hair

Coily hair can be more difficult to work with due to being a little more resistant to holding in moisture. Make sure that you’re moisturizing the hair well + consistently will be crucial to avoid breakage. Using deep conditioning treatments and smoothing treatments will help to avoid breakage. Styling products will be detangler, leave-in, curl controller + a mousse.

Defusing

When using a diffuser, you do not want to put your soaking wet hair onto the attachment. Start by staying off of the hair, this will help reduce frizz. Once the hair is about 80% dry, you can scrunch the hair to encourage more curl and volume.

Finish off with an oil to bring back shine + again, to stop any frizz production.
