How to protect your hair this summer against chlorine

Who doesn’t love a dip in the pool during the hot summer months? As much as we are advocating for you to take the plunge, enjoy the outdoors, beat the heat, + find time to enjoy this season; at the same time, we’re here to educate you on how to keep your hair as safe as possible from the damage chlorine can cause. Afterall, you spend entirely too much time + money to let that hair go, + there is NO WAY you’re staying outa that pool this summer! Chlorine can have some negative effects on your hair. Some may seem like common knowledge, while others may surprise you. Here are some of the most common effects that chlorine can have on your hair and our suggested solutions:

  • Strips sebum: Chlorine may be great at disinfecting and removing contaminants from your pool, but that strong stripping effect can also be bad news for your strands and scalp. Chlorinated water can strip excessive amounts of sebum from your hair and scalp, which will leave you with dry, frizzy, and potentially damaged strands.

WHAT TO DO @ THE SALON: reset that scalp with a DETOXIFYING+REVITALIZING.scalp+hair ritual. We would also recommend adding in our SCALP.SCAN (complimentary), so you can see the scalp before+after, as well as our DRY BRUSHING+ to really get a clean slate.

WHAT TO DO @ HOME: take advantage of the yummy scalp revitalizing ingredients in the davines NATURALTECH ELEVATING SCALP RECOVERY TREATMENT FOR DRY & SENSITIVE SCALP.

  • Pushes up cuticles: Chlorine is also responsible for making your hair look lifeless and frizzy. Chlorine salts can get in between the cuticles, pushing them up, which leaves you with less-than-pretty-looking hair.

WHAT TO DO @ THE SALON: this type of frizzy, lifeless hair calls for our VEGAN+ANTI-FRIZZ.smoothing treatment.

WHAT TO DO @ HOME: davines LOVE SMOOTHING family to the rescue: SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER, MASK, PERFECTOR + SMOOTHER will bring life back into those locks in no time. If you’re on a budget and need to pick the faves: go with the INSTANT MASK+SMOOTHER.

  • Dries out hair + can cause brittleness or breakage: Your sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is a naturally occurring oil that is responsible for protecting your hair and scalp from moisture loss. When chlorine strips sebum from your hair, you’ll notice that it looks noticeably drier. If chlorine in your pool makes you lose too much oil, your hair can become brittle and break off. Chlorine can also cause breakage due to the chemical reaction it has with your hair’s proteins (specifically causing terrible split ends) and can cause an unwanted chemical reaction with your hair thus weakening it and causing even more breakage.

WHAT TO DO @ THE SALON: it’s time for our NOURISHING+RECONSTRUCTING.scalp+hair ritual. Bump up the repair with a KERATIN BOOST+ or a KERATIN SEALER+.

WHAT TO DO @ HOME: be sure you have heat protection – our favorite for summer is the davines MELU SHIELD> spray it in wet hair. Next, ensure you are treating both the lack of hydration, and the breakage in your hair with a good combination of products. davines NATURALTECH VEGETARIAN MIRACLE is an intensive treatment that you can get both hydrating + reparative benefits from. Pair this up with davines MOMO SERUM for well hydrated strands. The optimal wash would be davines NOUNOU SHAMPOO for this type of hair.

  • Turns hair green and can dissolve hair color + highlights: Those with blonde hair may have an extra reason to be cautious around swimming pools — chlorine can leave blonde hair looking green. But it turns out this isn’t entirely the fault of chlorine: copper is commonly found in pool water, and when bonded with chlorine it forms a film that sticks to proteins in hair, causing it to look green. Chlorine also can strip dye from hair, meaning you’ll need more frequent color appointments to fix faded color if you’re not careful.

WHAT TO DO @ THE SALON: For our blondes, book your TONER more frequently during summer months + top it off with our INTENSE BLONDE.hair treatment. For everyone else, book yourself with a GLOSS+SHINE.wash+blowout for a brightened look with tremendous shine.

WHAT TO DO @ HOME: always start with damp hair before jumping in + add davines DEDE MIST to those locks before taking the plunge. Once done, be sure to use davines SOLU SHAMPOO to remove any chlorine build up, without stripping color. Every hair type can benefit from a weekly nutrient- rich hair mask like davines AUTHENTIC REPLENISHING BUTTER. Using a leave-in liked davines OI ALL-IN-ONE MILK after your post-swim shower is also a great thing for your hair, since it helps to detangle while moisturizing and softening your hair. Lastly, always detangle gently using your davines WIDE TOOTH COMB and if you plan to do any heat styling- use your davines MELU SHIELD<3
