CONFETTI CROWN.WHAT’S KILLING MY HAIR?
the haircare mistakes that are destroying your hair
It’s commonplace for us to have clients with damaged hair that are at a loss for what the culprit is. They often think it’s only harsh chemicals like box dye, but they are mistaken. There are so many culprits from the environment you live in (like hard water) to the small things you do daily (like letting your purse strap sit on your hair)that have an effect on your hair’s health. Obviously, what you do internally matters a lot, but on the outside, here are the top things that we find clients do that can literally destroy their hairs.
WASHING, or rather overwashing.
We all know that the ingredients in our shampoo matter. But did you know that the simple act of washing your hair can weaken it? Think of it like this: When you over wash your hair you strip the natural oilsthis leads to scalp issues like an overproduction of oil trying to compensatealso leading to dry, weak, and brittle mids to ends of your hair.
Our bet: our solu shampoo 1x/week for clarity
our scalp + hair specific shampoo up to 2x/week
our dry shampoo for every other day
SKIPPING THE CONDITIONER.
SKIPPING THE CONDITIONER.
The shampoo cleans-that’s the job it has. The conditioner’s job is to protect the hair. Namely the cuticle. No conditioner=faster breakage. Wanting to skip because you think conditioner is heavy or doesn’t absorb or creates oil? We’d suggest you use the wrong one, or you already have some hair + scalp issues that need addressed before you can start with a blank slate.
Finer hair? Using our dede leave-in conditioner without a rinse out conditioner will give you protection without weight.
Greasy hair? Using a hydration rich conditioner instead of moisture, or protein, rich conditioner works wonders. Think of hydration rich conditioner to your hair like a drink of water is to your body, where the moisture or protein rich conditioner is like a drink of milk. Our favorite is the momo conditioner…and for our dryer clients the momo serum is a magician!
Sitting on your hair and not absorbing? We suggest coming in for a deep detox treatment and allowing us to get to the hair. By getting rid of the build up on your hair strands we can then get to your actual hair and recommend the best, customized to your hair type, conditioner. A lot of over-the-counter products can contain ingredients that will over time create a barrier or build up on your hair strands and not allow your conditioner to do its job.
APPLYING THE HOT TOOLS, BUT NOT THE HEAT PROTECTION.
Anytime you apply head over 300 degrees you are permanently harming your hair’s protein. Read that again…. yes, anytime you do this! So, don’t skip protection. Because, that is exactly what it doesit protects against the harm you are doing to your hair. There are 2 kinds of heat protectants: ones you apply wet and ones you apply dry. Look, we don’t care what one you preferjust be sure you pick one. Our favorites are the melu shield non-aerosol spray which can be put into the hair wet or dry, or the oi all-in-one milk which goes in wet but acts as a dual action protectant + conditioner + wearable treatment.
WET HAIR AGRESSION.
Wet hair stretches up to 30% more than dry hair. One common mistake clients can make is using their cotton towel to roughly dry their hair when its wet. Friction from the towel causes micro- breakage + a ton of frizz. Brushing hair when it’s wet might seem like a no brainer, but it’s not. Due to the “stretchy” makeup of wet hair, it has lower strength to it. Brusing your wet hair aggressively will cause the hair to snap. Might we suggest our hair turbans or water soaking scrunchies to get majority of the moisture out of your hair before you start any styling?
SKIPPING YOUR TRIMS.
Split ends don’t go away. They also are really pesky and simply won’t stop. Split ends travel. They continue upward, and over time this thinsout your hair. You won’t be able to grow your hair longer by skipping the appointment, in fact, you might even go backwards.
HAIR DAMAGE IS CUMULATIVE.
This means that all the: mechanical stress heat exposure *chemical processing
You give to your hair, will remain with it, and bond together. Once that hair fiber is damaged, it cannot heal. It can only be protected, maintained, or cut. We are here to help! Consultations are always FREE. Not sure where to start? Book oneand we can go from there.
