Anyone wanting to elevate their style! Traditional reasons for considering wigs + hairpieces typically included hair loss or thinning, Drag Queens, or dress up. But whether it’s medical, cosmetic, or just for fun- there are so many more reasons to dabble in the world of wigs!
Hairpieces can help ease styling manageability + provide dignity for those aging, with disabilities, or recovering from surgery. It is also a great way to try a new length, color, or style without the commitment or maintenance of changing your natural hair. And with so many options and styles to choose from… why not change up your look more frequently?
You get your wig… NOW WHAT
Don’t get your hopes up if you aren’t feeling fabulous the first time you try on your new wig. First, this is new to you so be patient with yourself + try looking at yourself from a different perspective- would a stranger actually know you were wearing a wig? Secondly, expect to get your hairpiece cut so it is customized to you! Wear your wig around the house to start familiarizing yourself with the feel of it, + make an appointment with a hair stylist that cuts hair pieces.
CUTTING THE WIG
Cutting wigs + hairpieces does require a different approach than cutting natural hair as it grows out of your head. For one, the hair doesn’t move the same. Secondly, if I mess it up, it doesn’t grow back! Ensuring you find a stylist who has worked on wigs before + has the knowledge + confidence to make your wig come to life is an important part of the process.
I like to cut wigs + hairpieces on my client’s head, to better work with their face shape + see how the hair lays. You can either wear your wig to your appointment or put your hair piece on once you are in my chair. The salon also has private space for you to transition between pieces if you’d like.
I will start with a consultation to understand your hair journey + goals, as well as what is working for you + what needs problem solving. I like to cut the hair dry + use different texturizing techniques to keep it looking natural + ‘lived in’. Sometimes we have to work together to find a compromise between what you want to see, and what the wig is willing to do. Since I can always cut more + the hair won’t grow back, I often tell clients to live with the newly cut hairpiece for a week or two before deciding if more fine-tuning needs done. I would say most of my clients have been able to finesse their wigs by themselves after just one visit.
