Why are regular haircuts so important?
Fun fact: If you are trying to grow your hair out you actually need to get regular haircuts. But, Why?
We get asked this question all the time. And as a senior cutting expert, Jocelyn Badalich states she often hears this from her clients: “But I’m growing my hair out - I don’t need a regular haircut …… “
Here is what Jocelyn had to say in response:
“Have you ever waited maybe a little too long + instead of the ½ or 1 inch trim you came in for it became 3 or 4 inches? The reason why is because there are 3-4 inches of damage. Even without coloring or other chemical services, you will get damaged hair. In fact, the environment is the biggest contributor to hair damage! (Wind happens to be the most damaging).
Let’s math it out: on average hair grows 1/4-1/2 inch a month. If you only come in once a year for a haircut- we are going to be cutting off 4 inches to get you healthy. That would be …8 months of grow out we just had to cut off! You are losing ground while trying to grow your hair out.
Now, conversely, let’s look at the math if you were keeping up on your recommended haircuts. If in the 8 months you come in for 4 trims (on average 1/2-inch every 8 weeks) you only end up getting 2 inches cut!
So, ultimately when you’re growing your hair out it’s better to get regular trims to productively grow it out healthier. Not to mention, your hair will look healthier, feel healthier + shinier, and it won’t break off at the end when you have your regular trims.”
But, how often should I cut my short style? This is another question Jocelyn addresses with her clients. “In short, when you get a short haircut it’s obvious when you need a haircut. It’s usually up to you and your liking...your own eyes.”
Jocelyn’s recommendation for short styles: “Once a month is ideal to keep short haircuts looking fresh!”
Lastly, what if you aren’t trying to grow your hair out and you don’t have a short cut, but you have long hair, curly hair or layers?
Jocelyn has a recommendation for that as well: “If you want to keep the bounce and sexiness to your longer layers aim for 8-10 weeks + your shape will always be perfect. Remember, with regular visits your stylist will make sure to treat your hair against environmental hazards leaving your hair looking and feeling it’s best.”
